Where to Start?

Whether you are looking to play piano for an enjoyment, or to become a serious player, we all need to start somewhere. We have 3 Division of Groups to support your goal.

Piano Adventure's Beginner Course

The Piano Adventure Course is a great way to test out if your child is ready to pursue piano to a further degree. The newly re-designed course allows us to mix in-person and online approach, in both group and private settings for the full course of the journey. It is expected that you will complete the course in 7 weeks. It's an easy and affordable way to find out if your child's interest in music and readiness in taking the private lessons. Parental guidance is encouraged.

Eligibility: 4 to 8 years old without a prior experience in piano

Division 1

Age 5 to 18

You may apply for Division 1 if you have some previous experience in piano, or have completed the Piano Adventure's course and received an invitation to join the studio. The application process and audition screening will include:

  1. Online Application
  2. Fee (Students invited to join from the Piano Adventures Course do not need to pay this fee and may jump to number 5, Wait-List, at any time. You will receive a priority registration when a space opens up, and you do not need to do number 6, Trial Period
  3. Submit a Video Recording on YouTube or Venmo, including the footage of the student's greeting, name, and the song she/he will play (Any song is acceptable. 2 minutes).
  4. Complete a Level Test by selecting one of the 4 packages listed. Level 1   Level 2   Level 3   Level 4
  5. Join Wait-List if you have been offered a link by email.
  6. If you are accepted from the prescreening audition and have been offered a link to join the wait-list, you will be placed on a trial period for a minimum of 4 lessons, up to a maximum of 8. During the trial period, you will be assessed on 1. your behavior (100%), 2. ability to follow directions in 1 cue (90%), 3. show interest in music (80%), and 4. show consistency in completing the homework (70%). The bracket is the expected success rate required to be accepted. Upon successful completion of the trial period, you will be offered to register with the studio. If any of the 4 criteria do not meet the expectation (percentage) at this time and have used the maximum sessions, you will need to reapply after 3 months.

 

 

 

Division 2

Age 5 to 10

You may apply for Division 2 if you have previous experience in piano or have completed the Piano Adventure's course and received an invitation to join the studio, have read the requirements in the Division of Groups, and would like to pursue a more extensive learning style. If you are between 11 and 18 years old and would like to join this group, you must pass the Level 4 test (step number 4) and prepare the audition with repertoires from minimum grade 8, Royal Conservatory of Music standard (4 minutes). Refer to the RCM Piano Syllabus for a complete list of acceptable songs. The application process and audition screening will include:

  1. Online Application
  2. Fee (Students invited to join from the Piano Adventures Course do not need to pay this fee and may jump to number 5, Wait-List, at any time. You will receive a priority registration when a space opens up, and you do not need to do number 6, Trial Period)

The bracket is the expected success rate required to be accepted. Upon successful completion of the trial period, you will be offered to register with the studio. If any of the 5 criteria do not meet the expectation (percentage) at this time and have used the maximum sessions, you may be offered to join in group 1 if the expectation score meets the group 1 requirement, or asked to reapply after 3 months.

 

Division 3

Age 5 to 18 (8-18 with Audition, 7 and under by own selection)

You may apply for Division 3 if you have previous experience in piano or have completed the Piano Adventure's course and received an invitation to join the studio, have read the requirements in the Division of Groups, and would like to pursue a professional learning style.

If you are between 11 and 18 years old and would like to join this group, you must pass the Level 4 test (step number 4) and prepare the audition with repertoires from minimum grade 10, Royal Conservatory of Music standard (4 minutes, you may cut), and prepare technique of 1 major and 1 minor scale with both hands (harmonic, 4 octaves, metronome speed minimum of 100 for 4 notes. You may include any other technique you can show under 1 minute in total.

If you are between 8 and 10 years old, you must pass the Level 3 test and prepare songs from grades 7 to 9 (under 4 minutes, you may cut).  Refer to the RCM Piano Syllabus for a complete list of acceptable songs. For technique, prepare a C major scale, 2 octaves played in both hands, minimum metronome speed of 80 for 2 notes. You may include any other technique you can show under 1 minute in total.

For prospective students who are 7 and younger, you may follow step number 3 below.
